アートを通じて社会的責任を問い直すことを理念に、米国ワシントンD.C.に設立されたNational Museum of Women in the Arts（NMWA）は、2027年に開館40周年を迎えます。いみじくも、国際的なグループ展「Women to Watch」も同年に20年の節目を迎えます。NMWAは、ブックアーツの分野において国際的に評価されるコレクションを有する美術館でもあります。本展は、その記念展に先駆け、国立新美術館学芸課長・神谷幸江氏の推薦による5名の日本人女性作家の作品を通して、現代におけるブックアーツの多様な表現を紹介します。
ブックアーツは、女性作家の比率が高い分野として知られ、私的な表現や手仕事を基盤に発展してきました。本展では、デジタル化が進む現代において、「書く」「読む」「記す」という行為の意味をあらためて問い直し、内省や自己との対話を内包するブックアーツの可能性に焦点を当てます。

Founded in Washington, D.C. with a mission to reexamine social responsibility through art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) will mark its 40th anniversary in 2027. Notably, the international group exhibition Women to Watch also reaches its 20th anniversary that same year. NMWA is additionally recognized for its internationally regarded collection in the field of book arts. Preceding the anniversary exhibition, this presentation in Japan introduces diverse contemporary practices in book arts through the works of five Japanese women artists recommended by Yukie Kamiya, Head of the Curatorial Division at The National Art Center, Tokyo.
Book arts is a field known for its high representation of women artists, having developed through private forms of expression and practices rooted in handcraft. In an era of increasing digitalization, this exhibition reconsiders the meanings of writing, reading, and recording, and focuses on the potential of book arts as a medium that invites introspection and dialogue with the self.
